Andar Bahar strategy and maths

For players who want the numbers rather than the rules. Where the house edge comes from, and which of the popular systems survive contact with it.

This page is for players who want the arithmetic rather than the rules. If you have not played before, start with the basics.

Where the edge comes from

After the joker is cut, 51 cards remain, three of which match its rank. Cards are dealt alternately, so the pile receiving the first card has one extra draw available across the sequence. That asymmetry produces a small probability advantage, and the payout reduction on that side is how the house converts the asymmetry into its own margin. The residual is the roughly 2.15% edge on the main bet.

Side bets, priced out

Side betWhat it paysWhat it costs you
Match in the first few cardsHigh multiplesEdge typically several times the main bet
Total cards dealt within a band2:1 to 100+:1 by bandAttractive at the long end, poor value throughout
Suited matchVery highThe worst bet on most implementations

There is no band, no suit and no streak that carries positive expectation. Side bets exist because they convert a low-edge game into a profitable one for the operator.

Card counting: why it does not transfer

Blackjack counting works because the composition of the remaining deck changes your expected return on future hands and you can raise your bet when it favours you. In Andar Bahar the deck is typically reshuffled every round, and even where it is not, the payout structure gives you no bet-sizing lever large enough to overcome the edge. Any system marketed as Andar Bahar counting is selling a pattern that does not exist.

What actually improves your results

  1. Play the main bet only.
  2. Choose live tables over software: fewer rounds per hour is less exposure per hour.
  3. Flat bet an amount your bankroll can absorb across 100+ rounds.
  4. Set a stop-win as well as a stop-loss. Leaving ahead is the only way to be ahead.
  5. Track your sessions honestly. Memory edits results in your favour.

Frequently asked questions

Can you count cards in Andar Bahar?

No. The deck is typically reshuffled each round and the payout structure offers no bet-sizing lever large enough to overcome the house edge. Counting systems sold for this game do not work.

Are Andar Bahar side bets worth it?

No. Every side bet on a standard table carries a higher house edge than the main bet, often several times higher.
