Baccarat gives you the second-lowest house edge in the building for a game that requires no skill at all. There are three bets, one of them is correct, one is acceptable, and one is a trap dressed up with an attractive payout.
The three bets
| Bet | Pays | House edge | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banker | 1:1 minus 5% commission | About 1.06% | The correct bet |
| Player | 1:1 | About 1.24% | Fine, marginally worse |
| Tie | 8:1 or 9:1 | About 14% at 8:1 | Never |
That is the whole strategy: bet banker, pay the commission without resenting it, and ignore the tie. You are now playing baccarat at close to optimal, which took you under a minute to learn.
Why banker wins slightly more often
The drawing rules are asymmetric. The banker hand acts after the player hand and draws according to rules that use that information, which gives it a small structural advantage. The 5% commission exists to price that advantage back out. Even after commission, banker remains the better bet.
Roads, patterns and superstition
Baccarat carries more pattern-tracking apparatus than any other casino game: bead plate, big road, big eye boy, small road, cockroach pig. They are historically fascinating and predictively worthless. Every shoe is dealt without reference to what your chart shows.
Live baccarat from India
Live baccarat runs at low minimums on most tables serving this market, with speed baccarat variants resolving in under thirty seconds. The faster the table, the more hands per hour, and the more the small edge compounds against you. Slower tables are cheaper entertainment.

Frequently asked questions
Should I bet banker or player in baccarat?
Banker, at about a 1.06% house edge after the 5% commission, versus 1.24% for player. The tie bet at roughly 14% should be avoided entirely.
Is commission-free baccarat better?
Usually worse. Those tables typically pay banker wins on a 6 at half stake, which costs more than the commission it removes.
