From the mela to the phone

Most Indians met 7 Up 7 Down as children, at a fair, with a man shaking two dice in a steel tumbler over a chalked cloth. You put your coin on “7 Down”, “7” or “7 Up”, the dice came out, and he either paid you or swept your coin away. Online versions, whether animated or with a live dealer, keep exactly that structure. The difference is that on a screen you can do the arithmetic, and you should.

The rules

• Two six-sided dice are rolled and their faces are added, giving a total from 2 to 12.
• 7 Down wins if the total is 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6.
• 7 Up wins if the total is 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12.
• Lucky 7 wins if the total is exactly 7.
• Some versions add side bets on a specific total, doubles or odd and even.

Counting the dice

Two dice can land 36 ways. Seven is the most common total because six of those 36 combinations make it: 1+6, 2+5, 3+4 and the reverse of each. The totals below seven account for fifteen combinations, and so do the totals above it.

Working out the house edge yourself

Here is the one formula worth knowing. For any bet, multiply the probability of winning by the total amount returned for a ₹1 stake (your rupee back plus the winnings). Subtract one. The result is what you keep, on average, per rupee staked; if it’s negative, that’s the house edge.

Take the traditional mela payouts: even money on Up or Down, and 4 to 1 on Lucky 7. For 7 Down you get ₹2 back 15 times in 36, so 15/36 × 2 = 0.833. You lose about 16.7 paise per rupee. For Lucky 7 you get ₹5 back 6 times in 36: 6/36 × 5 = 0.833 again. Both bets carry a house edge of roughly 16.7%, which is enormous next to roulette’s 2.7%.

Strategies that don’t work

Players love streaks: “Up has come five times, Down is due.” The dice have no memory. Doubling after each loss (the martingale) makes small wins likely and one catastrophic loss certain, sooner or later, because table limits and your wallet both end. Betting on both Up and Down together just guarantees you lose whenever a seven appears.

Live dealer or animated?
